Was a great game! Both teams played very hard and well.

Not sure about the terrible coaching. Agreed the inbounds play was a bad call. Not sure if they could have scored with 2.9 left and in the end it did not hurt them.

Joe Murphy actually taught in Streator in the '70s before heading to the suburbs and eventually Winnebago, but, ironically, was never a head basketball coach here.

The guy has won close to 500 games at 'Bago. Could have had one more tonight and a good chance for at least one more this weekend. But it's hard to question the decision-making skills of any coach with that many wins under his belt.

Winnebago's record under Murphy over the past 8 seasons is 220-27 (.891), including 7 regional titles, 5 sectional titles and 3 trips to State. Amazing.

Yeah - Coach Murphy is a great coach, my guess is he is a little smarter than some give him credit for.

I don't remember Coach Joe teaching at the High School. He did teach shop at Northlawn. He also assisted Coach Bair as a basketball coach.

donkey, I had thought it was SHS. Thanks for setting me straight.

Nobody, and I mean nobody I'd talked to in the past could confirm the story that he taught in Streator. I'd only heard it from Murphy himself and had read it in the Rockford Register-Star, and in neither case was anyone specific about which school he'd been at. Joe had just said he'd taught in Streator but was not a head coach, didn't make any mention of Northlawn, so I assumed SHS.

He was at Northlawn in 1978 and 1979. He taught Industrial Arts and wasn't in town very long, maybe 3 years.

'79 would have been the year the Panthers went to State, right?

Yes. We lost in Chatham to Quincy (Dennis Douglas) in the Elite 8. Douglas, the youngest of the three brothers, went on to NIU after high school.

Dale Ralston coached our 8th grade state qualifying team. Coach Bair and Coach Joe coached the 7th graders that year, I believe.
