Hammer: Whole lotta Heisman hype

Posted by Hammer on Sunday, Dec 14th, 2008 at 8:04 am

Help me out here. Does anyone really care who wins the Heisman Trophy anymore?

After awarding the Heisman, for the first time ever, to a sophomore last year, the Heisman committee came back and did it again this year. At this rate, they’ll be giving it to a high school senior a couple years from now.

This is not to say young Sam Bradford isn’t worthy of the award, but trying to make heads or tails of the Heisman “selection” process is about as maddening as trying to follow the BCS selection process. Both come with a whole lot of hype and precious little logic.

Spreading the wealth or just stickin’ it to Grandma?

This is a special time of year in Illinois. The seasons are changing, high school football playoffs are in full swing and the Illinois High School Association is reaching ever deeper into our pockets.

For years, the IHSA has implemented a scheme that would be the envy of any politician in Washington, D.C. — at every regional, sectional, super-sectional and state high-school playoff event, NO MATTER THE SPORT, there is an admission fee charged.

Now, for those of you who only watch high school football and basketball games, you may be wondering, “So what? I always pay an admission fee.” Well, you may be surprised to learn that many high schools do not charge an admission fee to watch certain varsity sports. These sports include, but are not limited to, baseball, softball, tennis, cross-country, soccer and, for the truly heart-healthy fan, golf.

Thus, if you are a fan of the local high school girls softball team, you could watch 10 or 15 regular-season games all free of charge, but once the playoffs start, you’ll be expected to pony up $4, $5 or even $6 to watch that same team play.

This is outrageous!

How many football players does it take to…?

To be a doctor in America, an aspiring med student must pass the MCAT. Prospective attorneys must complete the LSAT. I propose potential NFL players must also pass a test of their own; the FDAT (Football Dispositional Aptitude Test).
